What is the HPI Visa?
The High Potential Individual visa was launched in May 2022 as part of the UK's post-Brexit global talent attraction strategy. It allows international graduates from qualifying universities to enter the UK labour market without needing a Certificate of Sponsorship from a licensed employer. Once in the UK, an HPI visa holder can work for any employer in any eligible role, change jobs freely, or work on a self-employed basis.
The HPI visa is not extendable. When it expires, the holder must leave the UK or switch to another immigration route most commonly the Skilled Worker visa if they have secured qualifying employment.
Eligibility The Global Universities List
The Global Universities List is compiled by the Home Office from universities appearing in the top 100 of at least two of three specified global ranking systems: the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the QS World University Rankings, and the Academic Ranking of World Universities.
From 4 November 2025, the Global Universities List was expanded to include all universities appearing in the top 100 of the global rankings a broadening of the previous more restrictive list. UK universities do not appear on the Global Universities List. If you studied in the UK, the Graduate visa is the equivalent route.
Qualification Level
You must hold a bachelor's degree, Master's degree, or PhD or an equivalent qualification at that level. Professional qualifications not structured as a university degree do not qualify.
Five-Year Award Window
Your qualification must have been awarded within five years of the date of your HPI visa application. Degrees awarded more than five years before the application date are no longer eligible.
English Language Requirement
Financial Maintenance
You must hold at least £1,270 in a bank account and have held this balance continuously for 28 consecutive days immediately before the date you submit your application. The 28-day period must end no more than 31 days before the application date.

What the HPI Visa Allows
An HPI visa holder may work for any employer in any eligible role without a Certificate of Sponsorship. They may change employers freely, work for multiple employers simultaneously, or work on a self-employed basis. They may study in the UK. They may bring a partner and dependent children as dependants on the same terms.
The HPI visa does not itself lead to ILR. Time spent on the HPI visa does not count toward the Skilled Worker ILR qualifying period. To remain permanently the holder must switch to a qualifying route most commonly the Skilled Worker visa before the HPI visa expires.

Switching from HPI to Skilled Worker
The standard pathway after the HPI visa is to switch to the Skilled Worker visa once qualifying employment has been secured. You must have a Certificate of Sponsorship assigned by an employer with a valid sponsor licence, meet the salary threshold (£41,700 or the going rate for your occupation), and meet the English language requirement (B2 CEFR). You can apply to switch from within the UK without leaving, provided your HPI visa has not expired.
Under the Skilled Worker route, five years of continuous residence leads to ILR and a further 12 months to British citizenship. The HPI visa provides a two or three-year window to secure qualifying employment before committing to employer-sponsored status.
After the HPI Visa Other Options
If you have not secured Skilled Worker-eligible employment by the time your HPI visa expires, you must leave the UK. Alternative options for those who have not yet secured sponsored employment include: the Global Talent visa if you can secure endorsement from a designated body; the Scale-Up visa if a qualifying high-growth employer will sponsor the initial 6-month period; or returning to the UK on a fresh visa category if eligible.
