Executive Summary

The UK civil partner visa allows a person who has entered into a legally recognised civil partnership with a British citizen or settled person to join their partner in the United Kingdom. The requirements, fees, and five-year route to settlement are identical to the spouse visa.

What is the Civil Partner Visa?

The civil partner visa is a category of the UK Partner visa under Appendix FM of the Immigration Rules. It is available to people who have registered a civil partnership either in the UK or in a country whose civil partnership registrations are recognised under UK law with a British citizen or person with settled status.

The civil partner visa is also available to proposed civil partners those who have received a formal notice of intention to register a civil partnership in the UK through the Fiancé and Proposed Civil Partner visa. That visa grants 6 months to enter the UK and register the civil partnership, after which the partner applies for Leave to Remain as a civil partner on form FLR(M).

Which Overseas Civil Partnerships Are Recognised?

For visa purposes, the civil partnership must be formally registered not merely a long-term same-sex relationship without legal registration. The UK recognises civil partnerships registered in most EU member states, Commonwealth countries, and many other jurisdictions with comparable legal frameworks.

Overseas civil partnership recognition verify before applying

An overseas civil partnership registration must be formally equivalent to a UK civil partnership under the Civil Partnership Act 2004. The Home Office maintains a list of recognised overseas registrations. If you are unsure whether your overseas civil partnership registration qualifies, verify this before applying — an unrecognised registration will result in refusal and the application fee is non-refundable.

A long-term same-sex relationship that is not legally registered does not qualify under the civil partner category. Such couples apply under the unmarried partner category instead, provided they have been living together in a relationship akin to civil partnership for at least two years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the civil partner visa the same as the spouse visa?

Yes the requirements, fees, processing times, and five-year route to ILR and citizenship are identical. Both operate under Appendix FM. The only difference is the qualifying relationship: the spouse visa is for legally married couples; the civil partner visa is for couples in a registered civil partnership.

Can same-sex couples use the civil partner visa?

Yes. The civil partner visa is available to both same-sex and opposite-sex couples who have registered a civil partnership. Same-sex couples may also marry and use the spouse visa if they prefer — the two categories carry identical requirements and outcomes.

My overseas civil partnership is not recognised what are my options?

If your overseas civil partnership is not recognised under UK law, you cannot apply under the civil partner category. Options include: registering a new civil partnership in the UK if you can enter on a Proposed Civil Partner visa; legally marrying in a country whose marriages are recognised by the UK; or applying as an unmarried partner if you have been cohabiting for at least two years.

What is the financial requirement for the civil partner visa?

£29,000 gross annual income for those entering the route on or after 11 April 2024. £18,600 under transitional protection for those who first applied before that date. At the initial entry clearance stage, only the sponsor's UK income counts. Both incomes can be combined at the FLR(M) extension stage.
