How Long After ILR Can You Apply for British Citizenship?
| Waiting period after ILR before naturalisation | |
|---|---|
| Section 6(1) standard route (not married to a British citizen) | 12 months from the date ILR was granted |
| Section 6(2) spouse or civil partner of a British citizen | No waiting period can apply on the date ILR is granted |
| Date that triggers the 12-month period | Date ILR was granted not the application date or decision date |
| Result of applying before 12 months (Section 6(1)) | Automatic refusal non-refundable fee lost |
The Full Naturalisation Timeline
The combined journey from initial visa to British citizenship takes approximately 6 to 7 years for most work and family route holders: five years to ILR, one year waiting for naturalisation eligibility, and approximately six months of naturalisation processing. The total cost from initial visa fees to citizenship is substantial budget carefully across the full pathway.
Residence and Absence Requirements at Naturalisation
You must have been lawfully resident in the UK for the five years immediately before the date of your citizenship application. The absence limits at citizenship stage are stricter than for ILR you must also be present in the UK on the date you submit and pay for the application.
| Absence limits — naturalisation under Section 6 | |
|---|---|
| Maximum total absences in 5 years (Section 6(1)) | 450 days |
| Maximum total absences in 3 years (Section 6(2)) | 270 days |
| Maximum absences in final 12 months (both routes) | 90 days |
| Physical presence on application date | Required you must be in the UK on the day you submit |
| Date of application | The date the online form is submitted and paid not biometrics |
ILR Requirement at Citizenship Stage
You must hold ILR, Indefinite Leave to Enter, or an equivalent settled status including EU Settlement Scheme Settled Status at the date you submit your citizenship application. If your ILR lapses due to absence from the UK (which happens after 2 or more consecutive years abroad), you must regularise your status before applying for citizenship.
The Good Character Requirement
The Good Character requirement at citizenship stage is assessed more rigorously than at ILR stage, because British citizenship is the highest form of immigration status and confers permanent, unconditional rights including the right to vote and a British passport.
| Good Character criminality thresholds naturalisation | |
|---|---|
| Custodial sentence of 12 months or more | Normally refused unless 15 years have passed since sentence end |
| Custodial sentence of less than 12 months | Normally refused unless 10 years have passed since sentence end |
| Non-custodial sentence, fine, or caution | Generally 3 years must have passed since finalised |
| Deception in any immigration application (SUI 6.1) | 10-year bar from the date of the finding |
| Previous illegal entry to the UK (from 10 February 2025) | Normally refused previous 10-year buffer removed |

| English language from 26 March 2027 (HC 1691, Appendix KOLL para 2.2) | B2 CEFR speaking and listening only (reading and writing are not assessed) |
| Scope of the B2 change | Applies to both ILR and naturalisation Appendix KOLL governs both. Applications submitted before 26 March 2027 are assessed at B1; applications on or after that date require B2. |

Naturalisation Processing Time 2026
The standard processing time for naturalisation is 6 months from the date of biometric enrolment. There is no priority or super priority service naturalisation applications cannot be expedited by paying an additional fee. Straightforward applications where all documents are in order, no Good Character issues arise, and no Request for Further Information is issued frequently conclude in 3 to 4 months.
The British Citizenship Ceremony
On approval of the naturalisation application, the applicant receives an invitation to attend a citizenship ceremony in the local authority where they live. Most local authorities hold monthly ceremonies. At the ceremony, the applicant takes the Oath of Allegiance to the Crown and the Pledge of Loyalty to the United Kingdom. The Certificate of Naturalisation is presented at the ceremony.
Once the certificate is received, you can apply for a British passport immediately. There is no waiting period between the ceremony and the passport application. Standard processing for a first British passport is approximately 10 weeks through His Majesty's Passport Office. Priority services are available.
